What is SIBU OLIVES?
~ Local call it as DABAI fruit.
~ Sibu Chinese Foochow call it as KA LANG.
~ Scientific name is ARTOCARPUS HETEROPYLLUS.
How it looks like?
~ Oval shape. As big as our thumb, sometimes bigger.
~ Its black in colour but the flesh is yellowish.
~ It is very hard. Means we can't eat it raw.
~ It has 3 angled seed. Only 1 seed.
Taste?
~ Slightly sour tinge.
~ Creamy.
~ A bit oily.
Where can we find?
~ Market, of course!!! But not everyday !!!!
~ Along the riverbanks in Sibu, Kapit & Sarikei area. Was told Kapit's DABAI are the
best quality.
Why we cant find in the market everyday?
~ It's seasonal fruit.
~ 2 time in a year following the heel of durian season.
How to choose a fresh DABAI?
~ Hold a DABAI fruit in your palm, then hold it tight.
~ Open your palm.
~ If it sticky, then it is fresh. If not, then not so fresh lo......
How to choose tasty DABAI?
~ Look at it's eye.
~ The larger, the better.
How to eat DABAI fruit?
~ Soak the fruit in a warm water for around 10 minutes or until they are soft.
~ Drain them and put in a bowl.
~ Pour some soy sauce and sugar.
~ Mix them well....and ENJOY.....
OR
~ Around 0900 ~ 1000 hour, you can place them under the sun.
~ shake them so that the fruit can be exposed to the sun.
~ repeat till the fruits are soft....Normally more than 1 hour.
~ Then just pour some soy sauce and sugar and eat like that.
~ Was told this method are much more taster.
How about its seed?
~ 3 angled seed !!!!
~ We can chop it into half. Do be careful !!!!
~ The kernel inside it can be eaten just like that....
~ We can also play "batu seremban" using it. Traditional games for children.
How to Store DABAI fruit?
~ DABAI will lost its moisture within 1 week. It will wrinkle and dried.
~ Fresh dabai fruit need to be pack by newspaper then a plastic bag...
~ put in the fridge.
~ take out when needed...
~ As for Cooked Dabai, u need to pack in a plastic bag
~ Put in the freezer.
~ Defrost them when u want to eat....
~ This normally will last around 1~3 months....I havent tried them out....
